Tim Peters: The North Korean do not have to worry about being deported to a hostile country, and certainly not being repatriated to North Korea. So I mean the worst possible outcome will not take place, but it will probably take a matter of time before the rest of them are processed to the South Korean Embassy.

Tim Peters: And I just got a report today that several North Koreans tried to enter a South Korean church in Bangkok and the church had its doors vaulted. And this was a very, very unhappy news for me to hear because churches, any kind of religious sanctuary, should always, in my opinion, have its doors open to people who are vulnerable, people like refugee applicants.

Tim Peters: In fact, my colleagues and I were visiting some North Koreans that were in hiding, not in Thailand, but another 3rd country not far from China. And even there, they are nervous. I can't tell which country it was. But the North Korean refugees are coming there in significant numbers, because they live in continual fear in China.

Tim Peters: That's what I'm hoping to see- more pressure on China to let the UNHCR work more fully and then these other countries as well that North Koreans can find various ways to come into safe haven without making their way all the way to Thailand.
